Pentatonix Interview

I recently got the chance to speak with Mitch Grassi of Pentatonix! Check out the interview below.

Hey guys! Thanks for speaking with us. First, can you please introduce yourselves and tell us a little bit about yourselves?
"Hi hello! We are Pentatonix, and we're an acapella group. We are comprised of five members: Scott, Mitch, Kirstie, Avi, and the human beat machine, Kevin."

When did you become a group, and what made you want to do the whole a capella thing?"We started out as an a capella trio (Scott, Mitch, Kirstie), but when we decided to audition for "The Sing-Off"," we added Avi and Kevin to fill out the sound. We were all fascinated with the concept of "a capella" when we first began, especially because we were excited to create new & interesting sounds! We all draw from so many musical influences, so you can imagine that we were all itching to collaborate."

What was it like winning season 3 of NBC's The Sing-Off?  Do you remember how you felt that day?
"VERY nervous, haha! It was definitely surreal. To know that we had put in countless hours of hard work, worked through illnesses, and overcome many obstacles was a feat in itself. But to be rewarded for it like this was unbelievable! We were very humbled and grateful."

How would you describe your sound to a new listener?
"A combination of hard electronic music, R&B, and pop. With a few interesting treats thrown in!"

How long does it take you to come up with your arrangements? How about recording the actual cover?
"The average time-frame is about 2-3 days. Unless it's super hard, then we have to meditate on it for a bit longer. Shooting the cover videos takes about an hour and a half."

I loved your collaboration with Natalie Weiss! Would you guys be interested in doing more collab work in the future?
"Thank you very much! She's incredibly talented and we were so excited to work with her. Yes, we are definitely interested in doing more collabs. It's always an interesting process. We're keeping our eyes peeled & our options open!"

What projects are you guys currently working on? What can we expect from you guys in the upcoming months?
"Currently, we are working on our Christmas album. "PTX Vol. 2" is also in the works. The fans can expect a lot more original material, as well as covers of new & unique songs."

What's an interesting fact about each of you that many people may not know?
"I like to DJ."
Scott: "fried chicken is and will always be my favorite food."
Avi: "I was an equestrian champion, I have the blue ribbons to prove it."
Kevin: "I am in love with China.  Spent 1.5 years there!"
Kirstie: "When I was little I used to pretend I was a mermaid every time I got in the water..."

It was actually my best friend Dylan that introduced me to you guys. He's a big fan of yours and is always playing your covers. Any chance you could give him a shout out on Twitter (@DTBMuzic)?
"Thanks for promoting us, Dylan! Yeah for sure. He can also follow us @PTXOfficial. :)"

That was the last question. Thanks again for taking the time to do this interview! Do you have any last thoughts or comments?
"Thanks for your time! Everyone stay tuned for some new and exciting penta-updates! Love you all!"
