Shontelle Interview

Check out my interview with the beautiful and talented singer Shontelle! I loved the interview and I know you all will too. Thanks Shontelle!

1. Hey! How are you? First, can you please introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about yourself?
"I'm a beach girl from Barbados who loves singing and writing songs. I love love and I love life. I left University where I was studying Law and Philosophy and moved to New York from Barbados in 2005 to pursue a career and life in music. It's the only thing I really never get tired doing. I hate to see others in pain or lacking for anything. I have a soft spot in my heart for animals, children and the elderly. But I'm no push over. My goons will tell you that! I go hard and I fight for what I believe in. I love fashion and glamour and I have the world's sickest shoe and accessory addiction. Oh yeah and my favorite color is Yellow! :)"
2. How long have you been singing, and when did you really decide to pursue music as a career?
"I've been singing all my life and always kinda took it seriously. I always knew I could make it as a singer and I always worked at perfecting my craft. While I was still in school in Barbados, I was actually juggling writing award winning songs for other artists as well as recording songs myself and also taking titles. I was still studying and I was becoming a house hold name at the same time. How I managed I'll never know. I was finally offered the opportunity of a lifetime by SRP Records in 2005. They heard some stuff I wrote and wanted me to do some work with Rihanna. That's how this all started. I jumped at the chance to do what I'm most passionate about and actually make a living doing it. I signed a production deal with SRP and very soon after, I signed a recording deal with Steve Rifkind and SRC Records. I'm now lucky and blessed to be one of the artists on Universal Motown's active roster. Before all that, I remember, I worked on a bunch of stuff on Rih's mixtape and we also did a colab called "The Hotness" on Save The Last Dance 2 Soundtrack as well as a really fun reggae remix of Unfaithful. I actually used to go out on some of her tour dates and perform it with her. I miss those days :("
3. Can you tell us a little bit about the process of getting signed, and how you felt once you finally achieved that goal?
"The process of getting signed is very intense. Very exciting yet very scary. It's the beginning of a new chapter in your life and you're now 1 step closer to realizing your biggest dreams. But you know that the odds are actually against you and the work NOW begins. You feel accomplished but now you have to show and prove... or in my case "Sho-N-Telle?" You now have to make thousands and hopefully millions of people believe in you the way that you do. You can't wait to start your life as a "signed recording artist" on a "major label". But it's hard to enjoy the fact that you have just accomplished something most people never will, because you are at the same time dealing with business, which is serious. It involves lots and lots of legal BS and you try not to think of all the artists who have been signed that you never heard of and that never released albums. You try not to think of one hit wonders and hope that the pile of random tossed cds and cracked cases scattered around offices and in trash bins, won't be yours. You are popping champagne, doing shots and eating fancy food and sipping wine now, so instead you try to imagine your first Grammy and a successful world tour and many hot selling albums. You try to imagine happy fans and children who's lives you have touched. You try to think of the smiles ans tears your songs will evoke... Getting signed was like a pure emotional rollercaoster... just as scary as it was enjoyable..."
4. Congratulations on your album "No Gravity"! I personally love your voice and all the songs. What is your favorite song on the album and why?
"Thank you! That means the world to me because I spent alot of time and care working on No Gravity and did alot of writing on it. It's hard to pick 1 fave because of this fact, but I feel a special connection with Impossible because it's my biggest single to date and my life has truly changed since its success. Performing it live is always very emotional because of the crowd response. Another personal fave is Say Hello To Goodbye (my next single) I wrote this song while I was recording in Sweden and I was very emotional at the time. It took me 2 days to record it after writing it because I simply couldn't get past the bridge without literally crying. It's very pure and honest and it's how I was feeling about my boyfriend (or whatever he was by then) at the time."
5. Who are your biggest influences in the music industry?
"I really feel like my musical style was influenced most by the music my parents listened to when I was growing up. They have great taste. The radio or stereo was always on and blasting Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Prince, Earth Wind and Fire, Seal, Diana Ross, Tina Turner and Whitney Houston. Lots of reggae too. Bob Marley was my favorite. They played alot of Motown music but also heavy Madonna, Elton John, Sting and the Police, Phil Collins and believe it or not Air Supply! But I listened to everything, lots of rock, metal and hip-hop later as a teen. At one point I became obsessed with Janet, Brit Birt, Xtina, Aaliyah, TLC, Destiny's Child and pretty much any boy band and emo pop rock band to emerge. That was the beginning of my fangirl phase LOL! Jay-Z is my favorite rapper and I won't stop until I record a song with my number one idol Alicia Keys! *DEATH* But I've gotten even stranger and now my favorite band in the world is System of A Down (followed closely by Green Day). Basically my iPod looks like it belongs to a schizo o.O"
6. Aside from music, are you currently working on any other projects?
"I love acting as well so I'm always looking at scripts and I've been called in for a few readings. I've also been doing quite alot of hosting and presenting lately. I really enjoy that as well. Maybe one day you'll see my on your tv or big screen! Fashion is my life and I have some great relationships with some big brands and we already have some plans lined up for 2011. Look out! The latest thing I've done outside my own project was working on Rih's new Loud album. Have you heard Man Down yet? That's me on the pen :) "
7. What's an interesting fact about yourself, that many people may not know?
"Many people don't know that I'm just as qualified and skilled at performing CPR ( yes I can save your life) as I am as a marksman ( I can shoot you clean between the eyes from a pretty far distance... yes I can take your life... not that I will... unless... kaaay I'll just stop here now... ) I'm also a great swimmer, I slay at lawn tennis and Mario Kart Wii and I'm pretty sick with two drum sticks!"
8. Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
"Standing on top of the world! I wanna buy my mom a new house and her dream car so I have no choice right? :) 5 years from now I will have that Grammy and run an amazing world tour... only God knows what else I will accomplish. All I know is that I will always work as hard as it takes to see my empire grow... I wanna feed alot of tummies, provide access to knowledge and put shoes on a alot of naked feet... "
9. If you could collaborate with any artists right now, who would you choose and why?
"2 artists top my list. Alicia Keys is epic and I love everything about her as an artist and as a person. She is talented and beautiful in every way. It seems there is nothing she can't do. Truly a Superwoman. She's also such a wonderful person to be around and I love how philanthropic she is. She reflects mostly what I would want to be like in my life. Real music, real people. I really wanna colab with Rih again as well. SO many people think we have beef and that's just crazy. I wanna release a great empowering, fun song with us both that would just squash all that and make everyone at home in Barbados proud to see their girls representing our tiny little island ( as we call affectionately call Barbados, Bim Rock) together. Accomplishing the "Impossible" ..."
10. Again, I want to thank you for taking the time to do the interview. I love your music and I can't wait to hear more! What is the best way for fans to keep in touch with you, and do you have any last thoughts or comments?
"Thank you for wanting to know more about me and it was my pleasure! All my fans hit upwww.shontelleonline.com. That's my official fansite and I love posting stuff there and checking it to see how my fans are feeling everyday. My official Universal website is www.shontellemusic.com.
